Talk and audience discussion on astro-environmentalism, space debris, and sustainable space exploration.

Humanity is moving into space faster and further than ever before. Satellite networks, mining missions, lunar bases, and plans to colonise Mars are no longer science fiction but are already shaping our future. Yet as humanity expands its reach, a crucial question arises: are we repeating our ecological mistakes on a cosmic scale?

Astro-environmentalism, or space environmentalism, is an ecological perspective that reaches beyond planet Earth. Rather than viewing space as an empty frontier open to unchecked exploitation, it considers the cosmos a shared ecosystem that demands care, responsibility and long-term sustainability.

One visible expression of this is space debris. Millions of objects, from flecks of paint to fragments of inactive satellites, now orbit the Earth. They not only endanger space missions, but can also damage satellites – impacting services we rely on, from telecommunications to GPS. As orbits grow more crowded, and extraterrestrial mining and settlement move from ambition to reality, what choices do we make? This evening reflects on strategies to ensure we don’t export the same extractive and polluting practices that have harmed Earth’s ecosystems into space.

21u00 - 22:00: Open conversation with Katrien Kolenberg, Steven George and the audience, moderated by Jana Kerremans. A few invited audience members open with a prepared question on stage, then the floor opens to everyone. With contributions from visual artist Soukaïna Aziz El Idrissi and researcher Jeanne Longlune (VUB).

The Foragers: Engagements beyond the Human, an interdisciplinary art-science project that brings together artists, researchers and enthusiasts to reimagine the ancient practice of foraging as a bold, imaginative and future-facing practice. Alongside film screenings, talks and collective practices, the programme comes together in the exhibition at Pilar (24 April – 29 May). This evening is organised in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA), Pilar and Moussem.

Katrien Kolenberg

Katrien Kolenberg is astrofysica en professor aan de Vrije Universiteit Brussel, de Universiteit Antwerpen en de KU Leuven. Haar onderzoek richt zich op sterren en stellaire trillingen, maar haar werk reikt veel verder dan de traditionele astronomie. Als wetenschapper, wetenschapscommunicator en kunstenaar onderzoekt ze de verbinding van de mensheid met de ruimte via multisensorische benaderingen, waaronder geluid, beeld en belichaamde ervaringen. Hierbij gaat ze ook in op de ethische, ecologische en maatschappelijke dimensies van de toenemende aanwezigheid van de mens in de ruimte.

Katrien is actief betrokken bij internationale initiatieven rond inclusieve ruimtewetenschap, duurzame astronomie en bescherming van de donkere hemel, waaronder projecten in Marokko en elders in Afrika. Ze pleit voor een langetermijnbenadering van ruimteverkenning (en -communicatie) gebaseerd op zorg, met milieuverantwoordelijkheid en ethische reflectie als kernwaarden.

Steven George

Steven George is Earth Observation Technology & Systems Engineer bij het Europees Ruimteagentschap (ESA), waar hij bijdraagt aan het ontwerp en de ontwikkeling van toekomstige Earth Observation-missies. Hij is bijzonder gemotiveerd om de Earth Observation-gemeenschap te verbinden met de sociale wetenschappen en multilaterale samenwerking te versterken, om ervoor te zorgen dat de langetermijnontwikkeling van aardmonitoring dient als verantwoordelijk beheer van de planeet. Naast zijn professionele rol is zijn perspectief gevormd door activisme, waaronder deelname aan VN-klimaattoppen en publieke optredens. Hij pleit voor een veilige en rechtvaardige toekomst waarin we mét de natuur werken in plaats van ertegen.

Jana Kerremans

Jana Kerremans is een gepassioneerde presentatrice en panelhost met expertise op het gebied van literatuur, cultuurbeleid, kunst, filosofie, museologie, sociale geschiedenis, duurzaam toerisme, stedenbouw, feminisme, LGBTQI+ en gelijke kansen. Als freelance presentatrice werkt ze voor verschillende gerenommeerde organisaties en evenementen, waaronder FAAR, Theater aan Zee, Nacht van de Vrijdenker, Passa Porta Festival, FTI And&, BOZAR Talks & debates, Brainwash Festival Amsterdam, Hannah Arendt Institute en andere.
