Kneecap Film
Mon 29 Sep 2025Fresh off the Pukkelpop stage, Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh (Mo Chara) of Kneecap appeared in a London courtroom later this week. He and his bandmates, Naoise "Móglaí Bap" Ó Cairealláin and JJ Ó "DJ Próvaí" Dochartaigh, are being prosecuted under anti-terror laws after a flag was thrown on stage during a show.
In their own statement, Kneecap called the charge “political policing, a carnival of distraction.” They stressed: “We are not the story. Genocide is the story. While thousands of children face starvation in Gaza, the British state chooses to focus on us. We will defend ourselves. We will win. Free Palestine.”
That same mix of defiance drives the film Kneecap (2024). Not a documentary but a biopic in which the three play themselves, it traces their rise as an anarchic Belfast hip-hop trio rapping in their mother tongue and voicing their ideals. With Michael Fassbender in a striking role as an IRA father, the film is a bold cocktail of satire, music and politics.
