Three Mondays in a row, our team carefully selects three documentaries that present unique angles on stories about music.

One looks into the personal story of a band within the setting of a live concert, another shows courageous attempts to break down (musical) barriers, and a third sheds light on an almost forgotten historical festival that has been captured in a mesmerizing docu. This Music Movie Monday is curated by Bjorne Baeten, Eline Vancraeyveldt & Gijs Even.

“I chose Eefje De Visser's Bittersweet Concert film because I love how the band has portrayed their entire album. Filmmakers Michiel Venmans & Jaan Stevens managed to shoot a beautiful film in one space: De Robot Studios, a Ghent loft where Eefje works, sleeps and lives.
The dynamic play of light, colour and Eefje De Visser's iconic cheography will keep your eyes glued to the screen. I love their music for its poetic, Dutch-language lyrics and Eefje's enchantingly soft voice. The songs are also danceable in a subtle way.”

Eefje De Visser Bitterzoet Concertfilm

In January 2020, "Bitterzoet," the fourth album by Dutch artist Eefje de Visser, was released. The promotional tour for the album was thwarted by the impact of the COVID-19 crisis. However, Eefje and her Belgian-Dutch band were in top form, surprising their fans with a unique concert film: "Bitterzoet."

The film goes beyond a mere recording of a live session; the footage takes place in De Robot Studios, a loft in Ghent consisting of one large space where Eefje works, sleeps, and lives with her husband and musical counterpart, Pieterjan. The entire film exudes the uniqueness and aesthetics of the group, transforming "Bitterzoet" into a timeless and highly personal cinematic experience.
