Ohme is a Brussels-based production and research organisation in Artscience, whose objective is to develop new forms of artistic creation, scientific mediation and exploratory research through collaborative and transdisciplinary practices. Alongside composer Roméo Poirier, they present Tales of Entropy, an audiovisual performance that combines live polarised light microscopy, computer vision and generative music.

Roméo Poirier
Hailing from Strasbourg and living in Brussels for almost a decade, Roméo Poirier is working in the field of electronic music, focusing on heavy processing of samples and digital collage. After releasing albums on the London based record label Kit Records (Plage Arrière) and the mancunian record label Sferic (Hotel Nota), in 2022 he returned with Living Room, his debut on Jan Jelinek’s own imprint Faitiche, transforming the layering of different times into a free-flowing pulse that sounds both nostalgic and mysteriously ahistorical.

Ohme
Founded in 2017 by a team of engineers and cultural professionals, Ohme is a Brussels-based ArtScience production, research and education organisation. It is divided into three poles: Ohme investigates the boundaries between artistic and scientific disciplines, contributing to the development of new conceptions of interdisciplinarity, with a keen interest in co-creation, knowledge sharing, research and the breaking down of barriers between disciplines, mentalities and audiences. This involves exploring new practices of scientific mediation, artistic creation and innovation, through collaborative and transdisciplinary practices.

Bringing together established and emerging artists, scientists, researchers and students, Ohme produces artscience projects and coordinates academic programmes on a variety of topics, from physics to music, from neuroscience to digital arts, from design to social sciences. Moving from the visual arts to the performing arts, from the natural sciences to the humanities, Ohme’s initiatives are transversal and attempt to question our relationship to societal issues, in the light of the arts, the sciences and their pluralism and synergy.

A stage-mounted microscope scans through organic samples, revealing transitional states of matter and its fluctuating patterns, which are projected live on stage. Roméo Poirier receives different signals from the live analysis of the images and transforms them into a sensitive musical exploration of the structures of organic matter, merging analog and digital tools. The music of performance aims at reflecting the contrasts and the textures of the different samples, oscillating between atmospheric landscapes, heavily processed vocal samples, warm orchestral fragments, thunderstorms and passing shadows of dissonance. The performance will be followed by an unformal presentation of how the visuals and the music are generated.
