Wu-Lu
Thu 21 Nov 2019On repeat in our office playlist
Get to know Wu-Lu. Nowadays, we have this South London-based producer, arranger and multi-instrumentalist nonstop on loop in our office playlist.
Having worked alongside Ego Ella May, Oscar Jerome, Poppy Ajudah, MNDSGN and Andrew Ashong, Wu-Lu already secured some substantial production credits. That's why it comes to no surprise that his own music is a heady, potent brew, finding connections between the worlds of jazz, soul, hip hop and underground club styles, never sitting too comfortably in one corner before chasing the next spark.
Somehow, Wu-Lu manages to encompass virtually all of these genres and none, while still capturing the spirit, the atmosphere of South London right now. Continually experimenting with the various influences on his Brixton doorstep, as well as some of the complex issues that a young mixed-race man living in London may face.
His latest release S.U.F.O.S. (Save Us From Ourselves) taps into racial injustice, black empowerment and self-exploration. Released in April, it's a collaborative affair featuring longtime friends Binisa Bonner (bassist in Ata Kak‘s live band amongst many other projects), Kwake Bass (tour musical director for Sampha and Kate Tempest), Nubya Garcia, Eun, Demae Wodu and Morgan Simpson (drummer for black midi). However, it is live where the impact of Wu-Lu's passionate retellings really come into their own. Make sure you don't miss it!
