Unschooling + TUFF GUAC + PEGAThu 20 Oct 2022
Rules are there to be broken, just like structures and patterns. From chaos, new things can emerge and these three bands prove that like no other.
Together with their textbooks, Unschooling have thrown all the rules overboard, resulting in a complex chaotic whole that is both crazy as genius. Besides being crazy, you can also just do it, and that is where the three ladies of PEGA absolutely excel. Because the way these ladies do it, no one else does it. And for madness in TUFF GUAC you need look no further than frontman Rafael Hilario. Order to disorder, with emphasis on disorder.
Made up of ex-members of MNNQNS and other Rouennaise outfits, the four dunces of Unschooling have built their own university on the pillars of post-punk. These home-schooled egg-heads have thrown out the textbooks and put a deceptively mathematical brand of rock on the curriculum, where complex guitar lines flirt with lo-fi spontaneity. The result is as noisy as it is sensitive, and as chaotic as it is intelligent. They’d still end up in the Dean's office if it wasn’t for a few shards of Pop propping up their grades from time to time though.
TUFF GUAC is Rafael Valles Hilario's DIY home-recording solo project. Rafael manages to make Kapellen in 2019 sound like a summer Sunday under the American sun. From Sixties bubblegum pop to heavily overdriven halogen garage rock, brought together to create something that can be described as cowboycore, but above all deliciously swinging so as not to get bored for a second.
At first a humble attic project, later moving to a basement, and currently a bedroom, PEGA began with 6 women meeting on Sundays for a “mumusicale” cleansing session. Then there were 5, then 4, and finally 3: Juliette, Bárbara and Leslie. Now, PEGA is a type of music that sets your inner wiggle in motion. This is Dino-post-punk that sways with a heavy gait, noise-rock released straight from an apartment ficus. Prestigious rock ’n roll guaranteed!
